What is "Joshua's Law"?
"Joshuas Law" is the common nickname for
Senate Bill 226. It was passed in the 2005 General Assembly and effects all Georgia teen drivers. As of January 1st 2007, all 16-year-old teens who wish to apply for a class D driver's license must complete a DDS approved driver education course.
Joshua's Law Course Requirements
The requirements to satisfy Joshua’s Law are to complete a state certified driver education course (such as ABC Driving School) and to complete 40 hours of supervised driving - six of which must be at night - along with a parent’s sworn verification. Our additional six hours of Behind-the-Wheel training is required to qualify for vehicle insurance discounts of at least 10%. Any new driver who does not complete an approved driver education course must wait until he or she is 17 years of age to get his/her driver license.
Upon completing the ABC Driving School course, students will receive a Certificate of Complettion, which is required for tax and insurance discount purposes. This certificate will also be needed when applying for a Class D driver’s license.
What is a Certificate of Completion?
A Certificate of Completion is a DDS prescribed certificate providing written proof that the student has successfully completed a driver education course consisting of thirty (30) hours of classroom and six (6) hours of behind the wheel instruction. For insurance reduction, a student must successfully complete this program and be issued a Certificate of Completion.
A Limited Certificate of Completion is a DDS prescribed certificate providing written proof that the student has successfully completed a driver training course consisting of less than thirty (30) hours of classroom and six (6) hours of behind the wheel instruction.
