Question What do I need to take with me when I go to get my class D license?
Answer You must bring the following items with you to the driver's licence office:
  • Joshua’s Law Certificate of Completion
  • Completed Parent/Teen Driving Guide (not required for students who complete our 6-Hour Behind the Wheel Driving Lessons, but 40 hours of supervised driving is still required)
  • ADAP Certificate of Completion
  • Certificate of School Attendance
  • Your Vehicle with Proof of Current Registration and Insurance
  • Parent or Legal Guardian

Question What if I didn't take ADAP in school, or am home schooled?
Answer You can take ADAP online for free. Click here to download the application form.
   
Question How long must I keep my learner's permit if I am under 18?
Answer You must maintain your learner's permit for a minimum of 1 year or until you turn 18.
   
Question How old must I be to start taking driver education classes?
Answer Most schools will allow you to enroll as early as 15 years. However, legally there is no age requirement for the classroom portion of the course.
   
Question How old must I be to apply for a learner's permit to begin driving?
Answer Minimum age is 15 years old.
   
Question What are the restrictions or provisions put on my learner's permit?
Answer You must drive with a licensed driver 21 years of age or older in the front seat that is capable of exercising control over the vehicle. You must have your parents' permission to apply for a permit. You may not apply or keep a driver’s permit if you withdraw from school, have 10 or more unexcused absences during the current or previous academic year, or have certain conduct infractions at school or school-sponsored events.
   
Question When I go down to apply for my learner's permit, what do I need to take with me?
Answer Certificate of Attendance form signed and notarized by your school, $10 (cash), your social security number, proper identification (a certified copy of your birth certificate, certificate of birth registration, certificated copy of court records, certified naturalization records, or immigration cart), and a parent or legal guardian to sign for you.
   
Question Does my Mom or Dad have to go with me to the DMV when I apply for a permit?
Answer Yes, a parent or legal guardian will have to sign for you.
   
Question What type of test does the DMV require you to take to get your learner's permit?
Answer Part 1 – The Vision Test: Your eyes will be tested by means of a mechanical device. The minimum acceptable vision is 20/60 in one eye, with or without corrective lenses, and a field of vision of at least 140 degrees.

Part 2 – The Road Sign Test: A set of questions on the meaning of standard highway signs will be given. You will be asked to indemnify certain signs, signals, and markers. You must answer 15 out of 20 questions correctly.

Part 3 – The Road Rules Test: The road rules test consists of a set of questions about driver responsibility, knowledge of laws, and safe driving practices. You must answer 15 out of 20 questions correctly.
   
Question Is it possible to obtain a learner's permit without taking a driver education class?
Answer Yes, you may apply for a learner's permit at the age of 15, but a driver education classroom course will help you prepare for the Road Sign and Road Rules tests.
   
Question Do I have to apply for my learner's permit at the DDS closest to my house?
Answer You may apply for a learner's permit at any DDS in the State of Georgia.
   
Question How many questions are you asked on your learner's permit quiz?
Answer The Road Sign Test has 20 questions, and you cannot miss more than 5. The Road Rules Test has 20 questions, and you cannot miss more than 5. You must wait until the next day before taking another test after your first failure. You must wait seven (7) days before taking another test after your second failure. You must wait thirty (30) days before taking another test after your third failure.
   
Question What's the best source of study material to prepare for the learner's permit test?
Answer Georgia Drivers Manual, materials issued to you by your local driving school.
   
Question When I obtain my learner's permit, is it legal for me to begin driving right away?
Answer Yes.
   
Question Do my parents or guardian always have to be with me when I drive?
Answer You may drive with anyone who is 21 years of age or older, with a valid drivers license.
   
Question How long is my learner's permit good for?
Answer Two years (24 months).
   
Question Is it OK to drive with my learner's permit in another state?
Answer In most cases it you are permitted to drive in other states as long as you have someone with you 21 years of age or older with a valid drivers license. However, you should check the driving rules in each state you wish to drive in.
   
Question With my learner's permit can I drive with my friends in the car?
Answer Yes, as long as you have someone with you who is 21 years of age or older with a valid driver's license.
   
Question Do I always have to carry my learner's permit?
Answer Only if you are driving.
   
Question If I lose my learner's permit, will I have to pay for a new one?
Answer A replacement driver’s license may be provided at a cost of $5.00.
   
Question With my learner's permit there is an additional form which requires someone to sign verifying that I have had 40 hours of practice driving time. Who has to sign it?
Answer A parent or legal guardian must sign an affidavit stating you have a minimum of forty (40) hours of on-the-road driver training including six (6) hours at night.
   
Question Is it OK to drive with a learner's permit after dark?
Answer You may drive anytime day or night as long as you have a licensed driver 21 years of age or older with you.
   
Question When I'm driving with a learner's permit, does the licensed driver supervising me have any rules or restrictions?
Answer The licensed driver must be in the front seat of the vehicle, sober and awake, and able to control the car in an emergency.
   
Question Can I ride a motorcycle or motor scooter on a public surface street with my Class CP learner’s permit?
Answer You must have a Class MP Instructional Permit to ride a motorcycle on a public surface street. The Class MP permit is valid for 6 months and will allow you to operate motorcycles with the following restrictions: no passengers, daylight only, and safety equipment as required by law.
   
Question Can I take my DRIVING LESSONS in my mom’s car?
Answer NO. All of the first 6 hours of driving lessons must be provided by a licensed driving instructor in a dual controlled training vehicle.
   
Question If I am stopped by a police officer, who gets the ticket, me or the supervising party?
Answer YOU. The DRIVER of any vehicle is the captain of the ship and is completely responsible for anything that happens.
   
Question If my learner’s permit expires, do I have to retake the driver’s education course?
Answer NO, but you will be required to submit a new application, pay a $10ee, retake the written and eye tests.
   
Question With a learner’s permit, is it legal to drive a large truck?
Answer YES, but only up to 26,000 gross vehicle weight.
   
Question Can I drive anybody’s vehicle as long as I have someone with me who is 25 years of age with a valid Georgia license?
Answer Yes. The vehicle must be currently insured and under 26,001 pounds.
